
James West Obituary
Dr. James Leslie West was born in San Luis Obispo, California on June 18th,1943.
He was born to his mother, Maurine June Shaw, and his father, Robert Leslie West and frequently tussled with his older brother, Robert (Bob) Shaw West.
James was lucky enough to have 13 children; Six that were born to him and seven more that were gained when he married his sweet Sue Holmes a.k.a. "Snuie" on March 10, 2001. Courtney a.k.a. "Warthaul" (Mark), Angie a.k.a. "Agnuso" (Mike), Natalie a.k.a. "Nitt Witt" (Ryan), Leslie a.k.a. "Louie" (Chris), J. Nathan a.k.a. "Natey Boy" (Jessica), Dannelle a.k.a. "Nelle No No" (Blair), Julie a.k.a. "Hot Momma" (Mike), Stephanie a.k.a. "Stiffy Poo" (Dave), Mike a.k.a. "Michael", Paul (Bobbi), Todd a.k.a. "Toddy" (Lynette), Mark a.k.a. "Markus Welby" (Debbie) and Tim (Holly). He was blessed with an astounding 46 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, whom he called his “Little Buzzards.” As the king of nicknames, he was then dubbed “Grandpa Buzzy” by the grandkids and a slew of a.k.a.’s by his children.
Those who knew him well would call James a scholar, educator, car enthusiast, wildlife lover and photographer, a loving brother, dedicated father, loyal husband, and the most adoring grandpa Buzzy.
James enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and held the rank of Specialist (Spec 5). Throughout his life, James had a love for education and had a beautiful vision to lead and create change in order to help children and teachers succeed.
He received both a Master’s Degree and Doctorate Degree in Education from Utah State University. He helped to change the face of public education in Utah as a math and science teacher and served on numerous committees for the school system. At the end of his career, he served with dedication, love, and a drive for leadership as the Superintendent for Ogden City Schools.
James was a Momma’s boy through and through. He could not wait to see her again and is no doubt rejoicing in her presence now. He was an example of Christlike love and servitude; a blessing to everyone he met. James was loved by so many in return.
A viewing in his remembrance will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 11-12:30 pm at the Poplar Ward, 2123 N. 2000 W. Farr West.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 1-2 pm at the Poplar Ward Chapel, 2123 N. 2000 W. Farr West, Utah 84404.
